[CHARLESTON COUNTY] – Two Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission (CCPRC) locations will be host for a traveling art and humanitarian project on Tuesday, July 28. The Flag For Hope is touring across 60 U.S. cities this summer to gather handprints from local residents and will be at the Folly Fishing Pier from approximately 12 – 2 p.m. and James Island County Park from approximately 4 – 6 p.m.
The first 100 visitors to the Flag For Hope location at each of these parks will be able to participate in this art project. Only an estimated 5,000 Americans will be able to take part. The Flag For Hope is headed up by artist Marcos Antonio, and is comprised of a canvas depicting the United States flag. Participants will place a paint hand impression on the flag and will be photographed and videoed as an extension of the art project.
According to their website, the Flag For Hope represents unity, freedom, patriotism and love and will be preserved in a museum alongside other impressions of humanity from around the world. The art project, an effort to build the US flag with paint hand impressions, began on Memorial Day Weekend at the Indianapolis 500 and will be completed in New York City on Sept. 11 with participation by survivors and heroes from the 9/11 tragedy. Other U.S. stops include select sites in Oklahoma City, Boston, New Orleans, and national and historic sites. Forty similar panels of artwork have been completed in 20 countries as part of a larger project called Impressions of Humanity by the artist Marcos Antonio. The Flag for Hope canvas will be stationed at the Folly Beach Pier near the beach access point by the parking lot on Tuesday from 12 – 2 p.m., and outside of Splash Zone Waterpark within James Island County Park Tuesday from 4 – 6 p.m. The first estimated 100 park goers at each site who visit the table will be able to provide a handprint on the artwork. Park admission fees will still apply.
