Spring is the perfect time of year for spending time outdoors in the Lowcountry. And your Charleston County Parks have created a fantastic opportunity to increase all the traditional benefits of working out by taking fitness outdoors. The park system’s premier boot camp program, Short Circuit, begins the week of March 9 at James Island County Park and Mount Pleasant Palmetto Islands County Park.

Through the Short Circuit program, Lowcountry residents can trade the crowded, hard gym floor for some spacious, soft grasslands and replace the recirculated indoor air of the gym with the cool, soft breezes of a local parkland while breaking a hardy sweat.

Short Circuit is a fun, calorie-torching class full of multi-tasking exercises that work all major muscle groups. Participants cheer each other on while they rotate through workout stations ranging in intensity from plank holds to mountain climbers to burpees and much more. All workout stations are easily modified to accommodate all fitness levels.

The trifecta of parks, trainers and participants provide the motivation, and instructors lead the way with workout demonstrations and modifications.

Starting March 9, Short Circuit classes are held from 5:45 – 6:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays at James Island County Park, and on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Palmetto Islands County Park in Mount Pleasant.

Participants have the option of purchasing single classes or registering in advance for six or more sessions to receive a $3 discount per class. Short Circuit is available for ages 16 and up, and classes are $8 each for Charleston County residents ($5 each by pre-registering for six or more classes) or $10 for non-residents ($7 each by pre-registering for six or more classes). Interested participants can also choose to pay the $10 drop-in fee at the gate without registering. Program fees also cover admission into the park gate.

Registration is available through calling CCPRC’s Park and Program Services Center at 843-795-4386 or online at CharlestonCountyParks.com (see direct link below).

“Approaching fitness from different perspectives, taking your workout outdoors, breaking away from ho hum routines – all these things keep us motivated and more likely to reach our goals,” says Allison Foster, Charleston County Parks Fitness and Wellness Program Manager. “I encourage everyone to try something new and embrace group fitness in our Charleston County Parks. We have so much to offer.”
