[NORTH CHARLESTON] – In honor of African and African American history and culture, educators throughout the Lowcountry and beyond are invited to bring their students to experience a special event hosted by the Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission. Celebrating the traditions and histories of West Africans and their descendants in the Americas, the African American Heritage Festival will take place at North Charleston Wannamaker County Park on Friday, Feb. 27.

From its roots in Africa to the Americas, and especially South Carolina, elementary and middle school students will be immersed in African American culture and history through a variety of activities including demonstrations, reenactments, performances and hands-on experiences.

Students will tour through several exhibit areas. Demonstrations and presentations will include: Harriet Tubman and the Civil War, the Magic of Stories and Music from Sierra Leone, Exploring Gullah Culture, Capoeira Charleston, and more.

Events will take place from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Feb. 27, and students will have the opportunity to visit each demonstration area. For more information and for details on registering a student group, click the link below.
