Guests to Holiday Festival of Lights Donate over 15,000 Pounds of Canned Food Items:
Goal exceeded for donations to Lowcountry Food Bank
(JAMES ISLAND) – Thanks to many generous patrons, the Holiday Festival of Lights surpassed its goal of canned food collections by over 50%! Festival organizers with the Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission set a goal of collecting 10,000 pounds of canned food items for donation to the Lowcountry Food Bank. During the span of the 2013 Holiday Festival of Lights, visitors donated 15,177 pounds of canned food items, which equates to 12,648 meals!
For many years, the Holiday Festival of Lights has collected non-perishable canned food items at the festival gate for donation to the Lowcountry Food Bank. Visitors who bring cans on select evenings receive discounted admission. Canned or non-perishable dog or cat food items were also accepted for donation. 2012 was a record-breaking year for donations with over 8,200 pounds of food donated. In 2013, the goal was raised even higher. And it paid off with almost 7,000 additional pounds donated at the end of this year, a record number for the festival!
The donations will help support the Lowcountry Food Bank’s mission of serving more than 200,000 families, children and seniors throughout the 10 coastal counties of South Carolina. For more information on the Lowcountry Food Bank and food collections or drives, visit www.lowcountryfoodbank.org.
The 24th Annual Holiday Festival of Lights ran from Nov. 8- Dec. 31, 2013. Next year’s 25th anniversary festival will kick off on Nov. 14, 2014.
