[ARCHIVED] Newly Renovated Gym Floor Unveiled

New Gym Floor Unveiled at Schroder Middle School

[HOLLYWOOD, SC – Sept. 27, 2012] – The community gathered Thursday for the official opening of the newly renovated gym floor at R.D. Schroder Middle School, part of Hollywood’s beloved Schroder Blaney Recreational Complex.

The opening ceremony, held Sept. 27, 2012, featured speakers from the Charleston County School District (CCSD) and the Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission (CCPRC). Also on hand to speak and lend his support was Rep. Robert Brown. Cheerleaders from CCPRC Baptist Hill Rural Recreation started the program with a lively cheer and children from C.C. Blaney Kaleidoscope Afterschool Program ended the ceremony by running through a paper banner on their way to grabbing a basketball and christening the new gym floor.

Located around R.D. Schroder Middle School and C.C. Blaney Elementary School, Schroder Blaney Recreational Complex is in the heart of where the community’s youth is every day. Managed jointly by CCSD and CCPRC as part of the Charleston County Community Education Program, the recreational complex features a multipurpose field for soccer, baseball and football, two outdoor practice basketball courts, playground equipment, an amphiteather and walking trails. The ugraded gym floor is located within the old Schroder Middle School, but is considered part of the complex as a whole.

The original gym floor was situated on a concrete slab with vinyl composition tile (VCT) flooring. After months of research, the project team decided the VCT floor would be retrofitted with a multi-use modular sports surfacing system by Sport Court. The new floor has a 5mm rubber underlayment, which creates a safer surface on which to play. Because the cost of the new floor came in under budget, CCPRC was able to purchase an extened warranty for the floor, an automatic scrubber to keep it clean, and wall padding behind the basketball goals. The new floor was partially funded by the Park and Recreation Development (PARD) grant.

The gym has a capacity of 150 and can be used for basketball, volleyball, and other activities. R.D. Schroder Middle School and the Schroder Blaney Recreational Complex is located at 7224 Highway 162 in Hollywood, SC.

The Schroder Blaney Recreational Complex is just one facility managed by Charleston County Community Education in the Charleston area. The Charleston County Community Education program oversees facility use of school buildings, develops and implements program activities, and helps strengthen the community.
