[CHARLESTON] – The Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission is proud to announce that 95% of the waste produced at this year’s Lowcountry Cajun Festival was either recycled or composted.

For the second year in a row, event organizers at the 2012 Lowcountry Cajun Festival worked with the Carolina Green Fair to make significant efforts to keep as much waste as possible from entering landfills. With the help of staff from the Carolina Green Fair and a number of volunteers from the Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission, 95% of the festival’s waste was either recycled or composted at the April 1 event.

All trash cans were removed from the festival grounds and moved under tents labeled “Resource and Recovery,” where volunteers helped festival-goers sort out their waste products into recyclables, compostables, and true “waste.” Vendors selling food products at the event were encouraged to use compostable or recyclable products. These combined efforts helped to recycle 1800 pounds of waste, as well as compost 540 pounds of waste at the 2012 festival.

The Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission will continue recycling and composting efforts at various future special events and festivals. Park-goers will also find recycling bins on site at Charleston County Parks.
