[MEGGETT] – The Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission (CCPRC) recently opened the trails of Meggett County Park to the public. The beautiful new property is now open daily from sunrise to sunset for residents to run, walk, ride horses or bike the trails.
Meggett County Park is home to dozens of grand live oak trees, plus a variety of wildlife including wading birds, songbirds and birds of prey. It is 416 acres in size and features an island, wetlands, five miles of trails and spectacular views of the marsh and surrounding landscape. In addition to its 416 acres, several tributaries of the Toogoodoo River flow adjacent to the property.
Meggett County Park is located at 7247 Ethel Post Office Road, which lies just south of Highway 165 between the Toogoodoo and the Wadmalaw Rivers. In its early stages of being available for public use, the park will not be regularly staffed, nor will it have restrooms on site. In addition, the park will not have trash cans and therefore park-goers are asked to “pack-it-in, pack-it-out” to minimize litter on the property. Leashed dogs are welcome on the park trails and picnicking will be allowed in certain areas. Admission into Meggett County Park will be $1 per person and free for CCPRC Gold Pass holders.
Trail Guidelines:
- No motorized vehicles, ATVs, or motor bikes are permitted.
- Pets must be kept on a leash, cleaned up after, and under control at all times.
- Follow trail etiquette when passing other trail users. Cyclists yield to pedestrians. All pedestrians and cyclists must yield right of way to horses.
- Stay on designated trails.
- The following items are prohibited:
- o Camping and/or camp fires without an approved application
- o Removal or destruction of natural resources and wildlife
- o Metal detectors
- o Firearms, fireworks, remote control airplanes, drones and any dangerous projectiles
- o Alcoholic beverages are allowed only in designated areas with an approved application
- Access may be restricted in order to perform land management projects, trail maintenance or host special events.
