[HOLLYWOOD, SC] – For Hollywood-area residents looking for a fun place to play, Schroder Athletic Courts are back open and just in time for summer! After undergoing heavy renovation, the Outdoor Athletic courts at Schroder Community Center are now ready for use. The two outdoor basketball courts that were renovated now offer diverse uses that better serve the community’s recreational and physical fitness needs.
In the years leading up to the decision to renovate, the courts at Schroder Community Center were cracked and in disrepair, making them unplayable. The Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission (CCPRC) operates and manages the Schroder Community Center and therefore made it a priority to give new life to the battered courts. CCPRC was selected to receive a play space grant of $40,000 to support the renovation project at the center. The grant came from the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) and The Walt Disney Company as part of their national Meet Me at the Park healthy living program that supports increased access to play spaces around the country. In addition, CCPRC received three Park and Recreation Development (PARD) grants totaling over $91,000 to help fund the project. The PARD grant program is a noncompetitive and state-funded program that offers grants to eligible local governmental entities specifically for the development of new public recreation facilities or enhancements to existing facilities.
With the grant, CCPRC renovated the two courts to accommodate multiple users, to increase accessibility and to diversify the sports that the courts are used for. The courts that were once only used for basketball now offer space for multiple sports including tennis and pickleball.
The Schroder Community Center is located at 7224 Hwy. 162 and is the center of activity for citizens in its surrounding communities. CCPRC uses the facility to provide recreation, sports and leisure activities for people of all ages to enjoy. The facility also houses other amenities such as a gymnasium, activity rooms, a fitness and picnic area as well as a walking trail. The staff ensures that the recreational programs offered are affordable to the residents in the area, and operates using volunteers for summer camp instruction and coaching the sports teams.
