Accessible Beach Path and Amenities Open at Folly Beach County Park
[CHARLESTON] – On Friday, March 16, the Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission (CCPRC) officially opened an accessible beach path and other accessible amenities at the agency’s Folly Beach County Park.
Made possible by a quality of life grant from the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation, the improved access to Folly Beach County Park includes a new pathway as well as accessible changing areas, showers and parking. These new areas are intended to provide beach access and amenities for people who use wheelchairs or have disabilities.
Guests to the ceremony were also invited to attend a nature program on the beach called “Shoreline Secrets.” A CCPRC naturalist familiarized guests with the shore’s shells, birds and other creatures while sharing stories about adaptations that allow for their life near the ocean. Beach wheelchairs were available for use during the program.
“We’re thrilled to have had the opportunity to work with the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation on this exciting project,” said CCPRC’s Recreation Administrative Manager Ashley Houdyshell. “We want to be able to provide access to all of those within our community, and visitors as well, especially at special places like the beach. The pathway will open doors for us to work with others in the Charleston area to provide new recreational opportunities for all abilities.”
The accessible pathway and other amenities are open and available for use by the public during normal operational hours at Folly Beach County Park. For more information on Folly Beach County Park, visit CharlestonCountyParks.com or call 843-762-9960.
CCPRC strives to help visitors discover how the agency’s 11,000 acres of parkland can enrich their lives, promote physical and emotional well-being, and provide venues for fitness and peaceful respite. The agency's goal is to go beyond mere compliance with the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) to provide access, as well as increased opportunities for recreation and participation.
Owned and operated by CCPRC, Folly Beach County Park is located at 1100 W. Ashley Ave. For more information, visit CharlestonCountyParks.com.
