[CHARLESTON] – The Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission’s (CCPRC) newest park, SK8 Charleston, was recently named Project of the Year by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) South Carolina section.

The 32,500-square-foot SK8 Charleston skate park opened March 3, 2017, with features including an 11.5-foot-deep pro bowl, a 7-foot-deep mini-bowl, 200-foot-long snake course, and a 315-foot-long street course. The park also includes a large viewing deck, a small skate shop, restrooms, seating, and food and drink concessions.

According to the ASCE, the park was awarded project of the year for 2016-2017 because of the numerous challenges that the designers had to overcome including excessive subgrade settlement, tidal influences on the storm drainage, and sensitive environmental concerns.

Founded in 1852, ASCE is the nation’s oldest engineering society. ASCE stands at the forefront of a profession that plans, designs, constructs, and operates society’s economic and social engine while protecting and restoring the natural environment. The society is a leading provider of technical and professional conferences and continuing education as well as the worlds largest publisher of civil engineering content.

SK8 Charleston is located at 1549 Oceanic St. and is open daily from 2-10 p.m. Monday-Friday and 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Admission is $3 per skater/rider and $1 per spectator. The park is open to BMX riders only on Tuesdays.
