[ARCHIVED] Charleston County Parks hosting Superhero Dance Party for people with special needs on May 17

[MOUNT PLEASANT, SC] – In an effort to provide ongoing recreation and social opportunities for community members with disabilities, the Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission (CCPRC) invites people with special needs to attend a super hero-themed dance party on May 17.

People with special needs and their families and caregivers are invited to attend the event on the evening of Wednesday, May 17 at the Cooper River Room at Mount Pleasant Memorial Waterfront Park. The fun will take place from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.

The spirited dance will have a superhero theme. Attendees are encouraged to wear a superhero costume or attire if they so choose. Snacks and refreshments will be provided on site, and a DJ and other special guests will be on hand to entertain all.

Advance registration is recommended. Tickets are $4 for Charleston County residents, or $5 for non-residents. Chaperones and ages three and under are free of charge.

The Special Needs Dance Party is part of CCPRC’s AccessABILITY program. Launched in 2012, CCPRC’s AccessABILITY program strives to meet the growing needs of community members with limitations. The program provides therapeutically based recreation offerings for people with cognitive and physical disabilities to promote physical fitness, health, wellness, increased self-esteem and greater independence.

Other upcoming programs as part of the AccessABILITY program will include four Special Needs Swim Nights at Charleston County waterparks this summer. Special Needs Swim night will be offered on the evenings of Saturday, June 10, June 24 and July 15 at Whirlin’ Waters Adventure Waterpark in North Charleston, and July 29 at Splash Zone Waterpark on James Island.
