[CHARLESTON, SC] – The Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission’s new skate park, SK8 Charleston, recently became a site for an art installation. Lowcountry Local First (LLF) installed the piece in February in honor of its 10th anniversary.

Large, 3D-format letters spelling “Love a Local” will be installed at various locations throughout the Lowcountry, with the letter “E” making its home at SK8 Charleston. LLF, which acts as an organization to break down barriers for locally owned, independent businesses across the Lowcountry, celebrates its 2007 founding with this campaign that will show “love for the businesses that make the Lowcountry a unique and vibrant place to call home.”

Letters will be spread throughout downtown Charleston, James Island, Johns Island, Mount Pleasant, North Charleston and West Ashley. Each letter will be uniquely designed by a local artist, with one letter in Marion Square being interactive for the community.

The “E” at SK8 Charleston features artwork from Lydia Campbell, who painted portraits of people of Charleston on the giant letter. It will remain at the new park site until March 31.

Owned by the Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission, SK8 Charleston is a regional-sized concrete skate park that spans over 32,500 square feet. The park, which opened March 4, is located on the neck area of the Charleston peninsula at 1549 Oceanic Street. The park will host its second grand opening special event March 11.

SK8 Charleston features an intermediate bowl, a pro bowl, a snake run that is over 200 feet in length, and a street course that is over 315 feet in length. The site also features a building offering a small skate shop, restrooms, concessions and seating areas. SK8 Charleston is open each Wednesday through Monday for skateboarding, and on Tuesdays for BMX bikers. The site will host two public grand opening celebrations, on Saturday, March 4 and 11.
