(JAMES ISLAND) – The Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission (CCPRC) is proud to announce the branding and naming of their outdoor recreation area in James Island County Park. Now known as the Outdoor Zone, this popular area includes the climbing wall and bouldering wall, the disc golf course, the slackline park, and the challenge course.
In recent years, several new activities were added to the climbing wall and challenge course area at James Island County Park. Slacklines were set up in a portion of the area to offer this dynamic and challenging sport to visitors, and a disc golf course was completed. The slackline park uses a myriad of poles secured into the ground as anchor points, providing different line configurations and lengths, situated two to three feet off the ground. An 18-hole disc golf course was constructed along the perimeter of the area in April 2013, through the assistance of the Charleston Disc Golf Club and volunteers.
The 50-foot-tall climbing wall has been a fixture of the park since 1997. The wall features 4,500 square feet of climbing space, including 14 top ropes and two lead climbing routes. Adjacent to the 50-foot-wall is the bouldering wall, which is 10 feet tall and features 1,000 feet of climbing space. Equipment for climbing as well as the disc golf course is available at the rental shop in the Outdoor Zone area.
The Challenge Course is home to adventure-based learning opportunities intended for teambuilding and leadership development for youth groups, athletic teams, employees and many more. The course’s low interactive challenges are conducted on or close to the ground. The high course allows participants to explore concepts of trust, self-confidence, stress management, and others. Features of the high course include an entrance cargo net and a 200-foot-long zip line, among others. The Challenge Course is available for group reservations and for select special events.
The Outdoor Zone follows a seasonal schedule. Hours and fees to participate vary. Rates are available for groups and parties. For a schedule of the Outdoor Zone park hours as well as information on fees, visit the link below or call 843-795-4386.
