Harvest Festival Celebrates Southern Fall Traditions on Nov. 7
[JOHNS ISLAND] – Long ago, Southern families gathered each autumn to celebrate the season’s bountiful harvest with feasting, music, games and fun. Today, the Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission revitalizes that tradition with a fall celebration known as the Harvest Festival! Complete with bluegrass, barbeque, and lots of down-home fun, the 14th Annual Harvest Festival will take place at Mullet Hall Equestrian Center on Saturday, Nov. 7 from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m.
The highlight of the Harvest Festival is foot-stompin’ live bluegrass music from five local bluegrass bands performing throughout the day! This event is known as a premier showcase of Charleston’s own great bluegrass talent, including favorites Blue Plantation, Bluestone Ramblers, Flatt City, the Southern Flavor Bluegrass Band, and Yeehaw Junction. See the link below for the music lineup.
Barbeque lovers take note - the festival’s barbeque cookoff will return for its fourth year! Visitors to the festival will be able to sample portions of barbeque prepared by participating vendors for $1 each (1-ounce sample), and then vote on their favorite. The Best Barbeque award will be presented to the winning restaurant on site at 4 p.m. There will also be plenty of other Southern foods for sale like roasted and boiled peanuts, kettle korn, and traditional favorite festival fare.
After feasting and dancing, stop by the festival crafters’ market to get a jump on holiday shopping! Harvest Festival is a very family-friendly event with plenty to keep the kiddies occupied including hay rides, a stick pony corral, pumpkin decorating, penny diving, and equestrian demonstrations. New features this year include kids’ archery for ages 8-17, as well as a group three-mile trail run for all ages that will at 11 a.m. and is included with festival admission. All activities are free with the festival admission fee.
