About Us
The Charleston County Park & Recreation Commission brings people together through parks, recreation, and the natural beauty of the Lowcountry. Across more than 11,000 acres of land, our park system offers spaces where residents and visitors can explore, gather, play, and experience the outdoors in enriching ways.
Our parks reflect the diverse landscapes and heritage of Charleston County. From expansive parks to unique historic sites, fishing piers, and scenic boat landings, each destination offers its own way to experience the Lowcountry. Visitors can climb, paddle, ride, camp, celebrate, reflect, and explore through a wide variety of unique spaces including waterparks, a climbing wall, skatepark, campground, and event venues.
Recreation is just as central to our mission as the parks themselves. Through festivals, interpretation, classes, programs, and special events offered throughout the year, we create opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to stay active, discover new interests, and build lasting connections with their community.
We are accredited by the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA). In 2025, we achieved our third reaccreditation with a perfect score by satisfying all standards. CAPRA accreditation is an example of our commitment to excellence.
Together, our entire agency forms a system designed to inspire outdoor adventure, lifelong recreation, and a deep appreciation for the natural beauty of Charleston County.

The Charleston County Park, Recreation and Tourism Commission was established in 1968 by an act of the South Carolina Legislature as a county special purpose district. In 1972, the act was amended to authorize the commission to promote Charleston’s historical and tourist attractions, develop and operate countywide park and recreation facilities, and provide technical assistance to local park agencies and community organizations.
In July 1985, the commission’s tourism responsibilities were transferred to the Charleston Trident Chamber of Commerce, and the agency was renamed the Charleston County Park & Recreation Commission (CCPRC). Today, CCPRC is recognized as one of the most diverse park and recreation agencies in South Carolina.
As defined by its legislative authority, the commission provides park and recreation services that complement—rather than duplicate—those offered by municipalities and special recreation districts throughout the county. As a special purpose district, CCPRC operates as a separate governmental entity, not a division or department of Charleston County Government or the State of South Carolina. While Charleston County Council provides oversight of the commission’s tax-related budget, the county is not involved in CCPRC’s daily operations or overall management.
A cornerstone of the commission’s responsibility is the development and management of a countywide park system. These parks are generally of a size and scope that would not be developed by other municipalities and public service districts. The park system emphasizes passive activities, outdoor recreation, environmental education, and public beach access. Each park facility offers programming generally directed toward the natural features and characteristics of the site.
Our staff and commission remain deeply committed to delivering high-quality facilities, programs, and leisure services that serve the citizens of Charleston County—today and for generations to come.
