Public Meeting Dec. 13 for Cooper River Marina Site Conceptual Master Planning

[NORTH CHARLESTON – December 2018] – On Thursday, Dec. 13, 2018, the Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission (CCPRC) will hold a drop-in style public information and input meeting for the conceptual master planning of its Cooper River Marina property. The meeting will run from 6 to 8 p.m. in the cafeteria at Military Magnet Academy. The purpose of this meeting is to determine community interest in recreational opportunities at the Cooper River site, taking advantage of the visual connection to water.

All interested members of the public are invited to attend. Posters illustrating information relevant to the master planning process will be on display throughout the meeting, starting at 6 p.m. The design team and CCPRC staff will be available to answer specific questions. A questionnaire inviting public comments on the conceptual master planning will be available onsite, as well as online on the project’s website at www.CharlestonCountyParks.com/CRMProject  following the public meeting.

The Cooper River Marina is an approximately 25-acre park site located at 1010 Juneau Avenue in North Charleston, immediately south of the former Charleston Naval Base. Originally, the Cooper River Marina was an important part of the Charleston Naval Base’s recreational facilities. In 1995, CCPRC acquired the property for use as a public marina facility. The property was received through the Federal Lands to Parks Program of the National Park Service, and is thus dedicated to public recreational use by the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF).

Upcoming work by CCPRC and the design team include evaluating public comments, refining conceptual design plans, and finalizing and adopting a master plan for the site by mid-year 2019.

Use of the Cooper River Marina is currently limited to providing deep water slips and other amenities to recreational and transient boaters. After the public meeting, interested persons can follow project updates on the project at www.CharlestonCountyParks.com/CRMProject.
