Offered prior to and after the symposium ends, our ACA Instructor Certification program polishes the paddling and teaching skills of already competent paddlers aspiring to become instructors or trip leaders. Certification is based upon successful demonstration of technical competency and teaching skills.

L-1/2 Stand Up Paddleboard Instructor Certification Workshop

This workshop (IDW) with the certification exam (ICE) is for the ACA's L-1 and L-2 Basic Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) Instructor. This certification is for those teaching students in areas with mild winds and modest tidal currents. It emphasizes safety, efficiency, and self-reliance for those traveling by SUP in controlled conditions. Participants must be a current member of the ACA and have an ACA number by the start of your course. L-3 SUP Surf Instructor Certification Workshop

This certification workshop is for current SUP instructors wishing to upgrade their certification. The L-3 SUP Surf is designed for instructors teaching SUP in the surf environment. This course introduces paddlers to surf zone dynamics, etiquette, paddling in and out of the break, and basic SUP surf skills that focus on fun. Safety, efficiency, and self-reliance are emphasized for those traveling by SUP in more dynamic conditions. Participants must be current ACA members and have an ACA L-2 SUP instructor status. L-2/3 Surf Ski Instructor Trainer Development Workshop

As aspiring Instructor Trainers, the goal of this Instructor Trainer Development Workshop (ITDW) is to give surf ski instructors who want to teach a solid and safe base from which to begin for their certification workshops. Curriculum will cover the basics of surf skis, discuss and execute intermediate and advanced surf ski maneuvers, and incorporate both on-land and on-water instruction. We cover both self and assisted rescues and discuss the safety of trip planning, group awareness, and responsibility. The Instructor Trainer Candidates at the end of the workshop will have a solid base from which to start coaching other participants and instructors safely, effectively, and efficiently in the surf ski environment. The candidate will also be able to give their students great skills from which they can grow their paddling skills for the rest of their paddling careers.

This Level 3: Coastal Kayaking Instructor Certification Exam (ICE) offers aspiring instructors to be tested on teaching techniques, necessary skills, and knowledge of the ACA curriculum over the intensive, two-day course. Prerequisite: Testing Candidate must have successfully completed a Level 3: IDW and one of the following; Coastal Kayak Skills Assessment or Level 3: Coastal Kayak Trip Leader Assessment (effective January 1, 2016).
