Standards-Based Education Field Trips
Ravenel Caw Caw Interpretive Center

Ravenel Caw Caw Interpretive Center is an ideal location for your class field trip.  In addition to standards-based programming, Caw Caw offers over 6.3 miles of hiking trails, over 100 acres of intact former rice fields, a classroom with AV equipment, a laboratory with microscopes, and kiosks and exhibits throughout the park for a wide variety of educational experiences. 

The following programs are designed for groups of up to 25 students with two chaperones and can be repeated to accommodate larger groups. 

Your students can experience a Social Studies program and Environmental Education program during the same field trip!

Habitat Chat
The Ravenel Caw Caw Interpretive Center encompasses several habitats.  Students are guided through an investigative activity-based experience.  The flora and fauna of a distinct ecosystem will be identified.  Samples will be gathered from the area for further observation in the lab.

Birds
Take a close look at beaks, feet, eggs, and feathers.  Beginning birders will use binoculars to observe birds in the park and search for bird behaviors such as flight, bathing, and feeding.  The unique characteristics of birds that make them suited to so many areas will be explored.

Plants for Primary Grades
Students will learn the parts of a plant through a short story, role play, and seed sorting activities.  A plant walk will explore the historical role of plants in practical uses.  Props are used to discuss the role of plants in our modern everyday lives.

Plants for Primary Grades: PUMPKINS!
Fall is a beautiful time to come to the park and explore the parts of a plant through the theme of a memorable orange fruit.  We'll scoop seeds, role-play plant life cycles, and have fun decorating a pumpkin to take home.  This program is only available during October.

Carolina Gold
Students examine the various steps required for the cultivation of rice, the roles and influences of enslaved Africans and African Americans on the process, and how people historically and presently interact with the environments associated with rice cultivation.

Rice & Liberty
The Stono Slave Rebellion was one of the largest uprisings in North America.  Students investigate the rebellion and how it relates to the enslavement of Africans on South Carolina's rice plantations.

120 minutes 7-12  $110 per group of up to 25 students 
 

Carolina Indigo 
18th Century South Carolinians sought to diversify the plantation economy with the introduction of indigo.  Tie dye your own t-shirt with indigo and learn about the "magical" history of this amazing plant.

Native Americans of Coastal South Carolina 
Students explore Native American culture of coastal South Carolina at the time of European settlement.  Learn how local tribes successfully used the natural resources available to meet their needs.

Natural Resource Management 
Students learn how natural resource managers monitor and manipulate conditions to attract a variety of animal and plant life for recreation and conservation purposes.

Teachers can work with Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission Social Studies and Environmental Education staff to develop customized programs based on the programs listed in this guide.  Staff may also bring the programs listed in this guide to other destinations.  Call 843-889-8898 for details.  Program lengths will vary.
