Adventure Camp

2009 Summer Day Camps

Adventure Camp (ages 10-12) Adventure camp introduces young people to the joys and rewards of outdoor recreation!  Campers can choose canoeing, sea kayaking, mountain biking, or whitewater kayaking as their adventure of the week.  They will participate in all core activities while focusing on their main adventure activity.  Establishing a fun and safe learning environment is our top priority.  There is a 6:1 camper to staff ratio with 12 campers per session.

Meals and equipment are provided for Thursday’s overnight campout.

Whitewater Kayak I

Welcome to the fun and exciting sport of Whitewater Kayaking!  We’ll build basic skills and proper techniques on the lake at James Island County Park.  Then we’ll head to the beach and test our skills in the surf.  Overnight camping will be at James Island County Park.

Canoe I

Campers will be introduced to the art of canoeing as they practice proper techniques and learn correct paddling methods and rescues through fun games.  Campers will also learn to cooperate and communicate with each other to maneuver their canoes effectively.  Overnight camping will be at Givhan’s Ferry State Park.

Mountain Bike & Rock Climb

Ride through a log garden, splash through puddles, and cruise down some awesome trails!  Basic mountain biking skills will be covered by camp staff.  We’ll also learn the basics of Rock Climbing on our 50-ft. climbing wall at James Island County Park.  The week will culminate with an overnight camping trip to the Midlands to bike the trails at Harbison State Forest in Columbia.

Sea Kayak

Young kayakers will practice safety and control as we learn to paddle sea kayaks on the lake at James Island County Park.  Campers will learn correct paddling techniques and practice self and assisted rescues.  The week will peak with a day trip in local creeks and marshes.  Overnight camping will be at Palmetto Islands County Park or James Island County Park

Whitewater Kayak II

After a kayaking skills refresher, we are on to moving water where we help each camper hone skills learned previously in Whitewater Kayak I.  Basic river rescue techniques and river reading skills will be practiced.  We’ll paddle on moving water as a warm-up for a paddle on the Saluda River (Class I & II rapids).  Overnight camping will be at Harbison State Forest in Columbia.

PREREQUISITE:  Adventure Camp Whitewater Kayak I or Whitewater Quick Start on July 25 (Course #20203). 

 

Canoe II

Paddlers will be introduced to moving water and the finer points of boat control.  Basic river rescue techniques and river reading skills will be covered in a fun learning environment and then tested on the Saluda River (Class I & II rapids).  Overnight camping will be at Harbison State Forest in Columbia.

*Charleston County residents contribute to the development of our county park system through property taxes, therefore a discounted rate is available to them.
