§ Three staff members from the Maintenance Division hold certifications from the National Recreation and Parks Association (NRPA). These staff members are designated as Certified Playground Safety Inspectors (CPSI).
§ If the Folly Beach Fishing Pier’s wooden deck boards were placed end to end they would extend over 9 miles in length. A local marine service provider is contracted annually to perform inspections of the pier infrastructure.
§ The Maintenance Division has a crew devoted to designing, building, operating, and maintaining all of the electrical light displays for the Holiday Festival of Lights. The creative Charleston and Lowcountry scenes and icons are all a product of these skilled craftsmen.
§ Several types of lights are used (bulbs, rope, mini, etc.) for the Holiday Festival of Lights. If you stretched the number of mini-light strings, used each year, end to end they would reach over 70 miles. (25’x 15,000 strands = 375,000 feet/5,280 feet per mile=71.02)
§ All three PRC water parks combined utilize over 350lbs/day of sanitizing chemicals to meet DHEC standards. The total chemical use for a season is over 30 tons of calcium hypochlorite. Whirlin’ Waters Waterpark alone uses over a million (1,000,000) gallons of water during an operating season.
§ Due to the magnitude of our aquatic facilities, the Maintenance Division has nineteen (19) State of South Carolina Certified Pool Operators, of which twelve (12) are also qualified National Recreation and Parks Association (NRPA) Aquatic Facility Operators.
§ Cleanliness is our number one routine at all facilities. At James Island County Park alone, the trash collection exceeds 120 tons per year.
§ The grounds maintenance staff mow weekly at all facilities in the growing season. For example, using a 72” reel mower one man can mow the 10-acre Tifway 419 bermuda meadow at James Island County Park in six (6) hours. Class “A” turf may require mowing twice weekly depending on the growing conditions.
§ A grounds maintenance turf program is utilized within the park facilities. A typical program includes soil testing, fertilization, pesticide (insect & weed controls), aeration, irrigation, soil amendments, and proper mowing routines.
§ The Boat Landing Crew maintains 19 landings. The landings offer a total of 750 parking spaces, 14 floating docks, and 39 paved ramp lanes.
§ Professional divers are contracted annually to perform underwater inspections of the Cooper River Marina breakwaters and infrastructure.
§ Over eight miles of boardwalks, dikes, trails, and firebreaks are maintained at the Caw Caw Interpretive Center.
§ Imagine thoroughly cleaning 10 three-bedroom houses in five hours. That’s what the James Island Building Maintenance Crew is responsible for with weekly rentals of 10 cottages every Monday from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
§ The Support Crew services 248 Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning systems and over 70 backflow devices agency-wide. |
