Helpful Hints for a Great Birding Trip
 |
Wondering what to bring with you?
- If possible, please be prepared for your birding program by bringing binoculars.
- Wear appropriate shoes.
- Please bring insect repellent, sunscreen, and plenty of drinking water.
|
| Following are tips to help you have a successful and productive birding trip: |
- Please stay near the leader who will set the pace.
- Please do not walk ahead of the group. This can scare wildlife before the group has a chance to observe it.
- If you see a bird, do not rush toward it. Instead, let your leader know that the bird is there. He/she will determine how best to view the bird. Our spotting scope, as set up by the leader, can also assist with close-up views.
- Experienced birders are encouraged to allow others to look through the spotting scope first.
- Talking quietly is acceptable. We have noticed that birds sometimes get curious about our talking and come closer to investigate. However, anything more than quiet conversation can scare birds away or cause them to remain hidden.
- If you decide to leave the walk, please let the leader know. The leader needs to know where all of the participants are at all times.
- Please consider wearing muted colors such as brown or green. Studies have shown that white, yellow, and other bright colors tend to alarm wildlife and make them harder to see.

In addition to the above, please note the following for birdwalks on the beach:
- Weather conditions at any beach can be extreme. Please be prepared for potentially high winds and lots of sun. In cooler months, it can be considerably colder at the beach relative to other areas that are protected from beach winds. Please dress appropriately!
- Walks at the Folly Beach County Park (southwest end of Folly Beach) during park hours may require you to pay a parking fee.
- Walks at Lighthouse Inlet Heritage Preserve (northeast end of Folly Beach) will allow free parking along the road inside the gate. The gate will be locked during the birding program. If you need to leave before the scheduled ending time, please park outside of the gate.
