Attention educators!  Reveal new meanings for your students by participating in African American Heritage Days at North Charleston Wannamaker County Park.  Join a celebration of African American culture and history through demonstrations, re-enactments, performances, hands-on experiences, and more!  This event addresses SC social studies standards and explores African American heritage, from its roots in Africa, to the Caribbean, the Americas, and specifically South Carolina.

Area 1:  Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone-South Carolina connections through language, music, and dance

Area 2:  Capeoira Dance

Afro-Brazilian dance and sport with roots in West and Central Africa

Area 3:  Steel Drums

Demonstrations, performances, and history of this musical instrument created in Trinidad

Area 4:  Rice & Indigo

Interactive interpretation of historic rice and indigo production in South Carolina

Area 5:  Underground Railroad Exhibit & Follow the Drinking Gourd Planetarium Show

Exhibit of artifacts made and used by enslaved Africans on the Underground Railroad and planetarium presentation on the use of celestial navigation by slaves on the Underground Railroad

Area 6:  54^th Massachusetts Re-enactment

Interactive drill demonstrations and a living history encampment

Area 7:  Gullah Life

Storytelling and interpretive booth

Area 8:  Sweetgrass Basketry
Interactive demonstration of Sweetgrass basketry, including history and cultural significance

• For every 8 students, 1 chaperone is admitted free!

Boxed lunches (turkey and cheese sandwich on white, chips, cookie, and a 20 oz. Pepsi product) will be offered and must be purchased in advance.  In addition to the boxed lunches, hot dogs, chips, candy, and drinks will be available for purchase on site.
